Joey Beltram

Not much explanation is needed when mentioning the name Joey Beltram because it seems like he's been around forever, always way out in front and never looking back. As a DJ, he's headlined all the biggest events, raves and clubs on the planet since the scene began (Universe, Mayday, Resurrection, Love Parade, etc.) and his music productions are historic anthems released on some of the most cutting edge dance labels in the past decade (R&S, Transmat, WARP, Tresor, Novamute, BUSH).

Joey Beltram was born and raised in Queens New York where in 1983 he took up DJ'ing as hobby. Two years later in 1985, he first heard the House sounds of Chicago being played by the likes of Tony Humphries on his radio mix show. Joey was inspired to make his own music. He liked the idea that it sounded "Home made" and was not done in a big recording studio. Raw and full of emotion, the music really had an impact on him as he felt he needed to create his own sounds.

By 1989 Joey was already producing records for many underground New York house labels and a year later he was working with R&S records in Europe. But it was in the summer of 1990 that he pushed the envelope of dance music with a tune called "Energy Flash". In 2000, "Energy Flash" was named Track of the Decade by MUZIK magazine in the UK and can still be heard in clubs well over 10 years after its release. At barely 20 years of age, Beltram found himself headlining major dance events and nightclubs throughout Europe. Proving he was no one hit wonder, he soon followed "Energy Flash" with more groundbreaking records. In 1991 he released "My Sound" and of course "Mentasm" the original hoover record which is probably the most sampled record in the history of dance music.

Since then Joey Beltram has continued to break ground in both House and Techno, but he doesn?t like to be placed squarely in any one category of dance music. He has spent most of the 90's blazing a path all his own and releasing records that inspired the next generation of bedroom producers. Some particularly notable releases are: 1993's "The Calibre E.P" released on WARP records in the U.K., the timeless "Places" album released in 1995 on Berlin's Tresor label and "Close Grind" released on Novamute under the JB3 moniker in 1996. Singles like "Game Form", "Forklift" and "Ball Park" have made these albums stand out and age extremely well, still sounding very relevant amongst today?s club favorites.

Currently he is predominantly producing for his label STX which he founded in 1999. Already having a great deal of success with the first few releases (such as "Arena", "The Money" and "The Selected Dub Plates" double pack), has placed a lot of focus on STX as a label with a style all its own. He also released "Slice" for BUSH records in January of 2002 under the JB3.

2003 and right up to date see's Joey releasing a track called "Release" on his very own STX label. Written and produced by CZR out of Chicago and remixed on the flip side by Joey himself. Also look out for a Remix from Joey of HATRIRAS titled "ANTHEM" due for release sometime this month on Bad Boy Bills IHR label.

Lastly Joey will be setting up STX records UK and it's first release will by Joey himself, title TBC, but planned for release June 2003 along with a completely different styled track on FLUSH records out of France under his JB3 pseudonym.

Phil Kieran

Over the past few years, Belfast dj/producer Phil Kieran has emerged as a vital talent in new dance music, effortlessly straddling the divides between house, techno and breaks.

Still only 25, PK has had major releases on Skint, Bugged Out, Soma, Yoshitoshi, PIAS, Loaded and Virgin as well as more underground cuts for Electrix, Mob, W9Y and Eukabreaks. Diverse artists from Arthur Baker, 6400 Crew to indie-rock outfit Simian have all received the Philly remix treatment. Check the Phil Kieran mix of Agoria's 11eme Marche for a taste ofPhil's sound, a pulsating sub-bass barnstormer of a track, capable of raising the ante in any club room. Expect another flurry of activity in the coming months including a new version of 'Big Fun', the Detroit classic by Inner City and a retouch for inspirational electronica pioneers Nitzer Ebb on Novamute.

Radio exposure has been regular and high profile with a recent BBC Radio1 live broadcast from Ibiza as well as the Essential Mix hailed as one of the finest of recent times. Xfm, Seb Fontaine, Fergie and Annie Nightingale have all featured sets from Phil, A long-time resident at Belfast club Shine, Phil has been djing since the mid-90's, inspired by the eclectic, hedonistic beats of David Holmes' seminal Sugarsweet nights back in the day. Shine Recordings is now well established, and Phil's remix of Acid Rave Music by Justin Robertson has been one of the label's finest moments so far.

Always keen to avoid chin-stroking blokery, Phil's DJ sets are a chunky blend of techno, electro and breaks. It's all throbbing basslines, jagged synths, cut up and in your face. Sometimes dark, always funky, always aimed at the dancefloor. Think Dave Clarke getting frisked over the dj booth by Carl Craig circa 91.

As demand for PK tuneage rises, so the bookings have stepped up too. Recent passport stamps include China, Poland, Portugal, Spain, the US, The Czech Republic, Israel, Holland and Singapore. This year's diary is already looking a bit battered. Back in the UK, Phil has played major DJ and live dates at the End and Bugged Out, Homelands and Creamfields as well as every quality underground night you care to mention.
